imadgets in america

Our Cruise ship arrived in the new world, we swapped to four wheels and now are zagging our way from east coast to west coast of the US, joining the dots marked by items of interest in as logical a manner as highways will allow. What are these items of interest? For my mother it is glass artists to supply our gallery. For me it is mechanical marvels. I hope to find that which can captivate me, inspiration, a better understanding of the direction I may like to go with my own mechanical creations and pick up a few tips from these experienced old workshop dwellers I meet. The first stop was the Morris Museum in Morristown New Jersey which holds I a large collection of clockwork automatons and mechanical musical instruments. The Automatons were equizitely made with  brass cams, and steel frames hidden beneath painted paper mache bodies which were cast within plaster molds. The star was probably the clown who lost his head to magically reveal it beneath a box. I found pleasing though the simpler wooden hand carved whistling man with a wind up tune whistling mechanism. There is something beautiful about hearing the ratcheting clicks as the key winds their uncovered demo automaton. The brass paddles of the spring regulator then start spinning silently but steady and the cam follower's glide up and down to push rods which cause an expressionless face to turn and a hand to wave as if possessed by an antique phantom. What aspects observed from this exhibition might I like to incorporate into my own work? Definitely an exposed winding, cam and musical mechanism which could perhaps be made more sculptural and ornate as to be seen as a feature rather than hidden. I was suprised at how nicer finish was possible with the paper mache showing this can be an elegant sculpting medium. The carved wood also has a nice authentic appeal.  There were a few practical objects which incorporated music mechanisms such as a chair which played when sat on and a coat hook triggered when a coat was hung. I like this idea of attaching an automaton to a device of function. Do visit this museum if you have time for a day tip out of new york city. Captivating and some creepy. On the way towards but probably not exactly what I would plan to create as my legassy.

Hello Language

Well hello language. Come on in. Ive just opened the shuttered window to my perception. Step through. Dont mind the nut and bolts. Please dont be intimidated by thr ones and zeros. Ive kept you spot for you. Just as you left it. The curtains are pulled. The windows gaping. Of cource feel free to draw them together if you see better by squinting. But you dont need to hear me say that. Just do what you do. You see. It seems I I shall be roaming again. Well Probably this time I could call it traveling. Thats right. No nights under bridges. No hitch hiking, no wild dogs no foraging and no ramadan. But danger and discomfort are not the only muses for creative observation. You see this time we are trying the other end of the walking stick. The claen end with the elegant curve. Now think big.Thing luxuriouse. Think dramatic. Think Titanic. Well Princess cruises to be more precises. Yes ok its been done before by countless overweight middle class accountants and their sitcom wathing wives. But but for this trip we are not intrepid explorers. We are darwinian observers of the confined human condition. 2000 passengers, fine dining a swimming pool gym and a theatre. But dont be ashamed. Lifes for living apparently. Heaedenism is fine if its done conciousely. Not sure if I agree with that one. I have aqyuired a concerina for sea shanties and borrowed hans christchen andesons baker boy cap. So if the environment  lends itselfe to a choruse of lower class bright eyed men sining wonderfull wonderfull copen hagen I shall be quhiped. But nether he nor titanics jack dawson are likely to be sincere aliases for my position. Ok I am personaly young, dirt poor and like to believe happy go lucky. So maybe Im not too far off. But I will be staying in a classy room with a balconey all funded by my traveling companion otherwise known as my mother. So thats one little pixel tainting the authenticity of my dramatised sepiea photograph. Or more honestly a hang up. And one we should try to clear up now before embarking. I love my mother endjoy her company apreciate her lavish gifts such as cruse ship tickets and understand that all men have mothers so is by no means a valid criteria by which to measure the calibre of any man. Courage capability desisivness and a loyal aleagance to guard ones fragile mothers and women folk from the raging dangers of ocean storms pirates and sea sickness. If your life is easy you are doing no serivce by making it unrewardingly hard. But qiver with thrill of knowing that the larger and more well equiped your ship the further you can travel. Have confidence in you goals and the stones you step on to reach them. Be real, appreciate and love from your deficite or your abundance. Ok now I can promanade the decks with gentlemanly pride. But it musnt all be in the name of apreciated leasure and endulgance. Like I said. It is one of the rarer oportunities to observe the doings of 2000 humans in voluntry comfortable captivity. Who are these people. Why are they here. Are they enjoying themselves and are they completely and utterly exactly the same. Just a few starting questions from someone who has little idea of what to expect. So welcome back language. With you help I will know i was there, what i saw and what I thought. All aboard.
